YOU CAN DEPEND ON

Dental Hygiene

Park Ridge IL Dental Spa

A bright and healthy smile begins with a strong foundation in dental hygiene. During teeth cleanings, our dental hygienists in Park Ridge meticulously clean our patients’ teeth and educate  them to maintain positive habits at home.

The Dental Hygienist’s Role

We recommend that most people visit our office for teeth cleanings twice a year (or once every 6 months). While you’re at our office for a regular visit, we’ll conduct a full examination of your mouth including oral cancer and gum health screening . Depending on your smile’s unique needs, a routine teeth cleaning may include:

  • The removal of plaque and tartar. Bacteria in your mouth and food debris combine to create a sticky film called dental plaque. If left in place long enough, plaque hardens into a tougher substance called tartar. This bacteria if left on your teeth and gums will cause inflammation in both your mouth and body. Cleaning your teeth daily at home can prevent the buildup of plaque, but a professional dental hygienist in Park Ridge can help by scaling your teeth with dental tools at the office.
  • Professional flossing. Your dental hygienist may floss your teeth during your cleaning, which helps to remove debris from dental scaling. This also provides a good opportunity for you to discuss your flossing technique at home and make sure things are on track.
  • Tooth polishing. Using a high-powered electric toothbrush, your dental hygienist will then brush your teeth. While this machine makes a grinding or whirring noise that some patients find off-putting, it’s a pain-free procedure that helps deep-clean your smile.
  • Fluoride treatment. Depending on your smile’s unique needs, we may recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride treatments involve applying a special solution to your teeth that will help prevent cavities for months to come

The Patient’s Role

Each person’s dental health relies heavily on their care practices at home. Here are some areas to focus on that will help you achieve your ultimate dental health.

Daily Care

A solid dental routine will include (at a minimum), brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once per day, and swishing with mouthwash. Those who are undergoing treatment with Invisalign®, have dentures, or have another special feature should be careful to follow their dentist’s directions for care.

Scheduling Appointments

You should make appointments with your dental team at least twice a year. These appointments are a critical part of your ability to keep your body and teeth healthy for years to come. Without them, you may develop issues with your teeth or lose out on treating an issue before it becomes more serious.

Eating a Healthy Diet

Enjoying a balanced, tooth-friendly diet can help you maintain your teeth for years to come. Foods and beverages which contain a lot of sugar can be especially damaging to your smile, as they can encourage the buildup of plaque on your teeth.
